7 km flood protection wall erected along the Danube with no ties

Flood Protection Dam on the Danube

The consortium Porr Technobau und Umwelt AG, Teerag-Asdag AG and Porr GmbH was awarded the contract for the construction of a flood protection wall along the Danube near Rossatz, where it runs through the towns Rührsdorf and Oberarnsdorf, on the right side of the river. Both towns will be protected from centennial floods by the planned flood protection methods which include the implementation of effective soil sealing measures, a superimposed wall made of reinforced concrete on which mobile protective elements can be mounted in case of extensive flooding as well as dams for flood protection and a drainage system at the base of the wall. The joint venture’s services include earthworks, master builder services, pipe laying and soil sealing measures. 

Wateproof with no ties

In order to waterproof the complete concrete structure along the Danube, concrete was poured entirely without any ties. The wall, 4.5 m high and 1 m wide, was poured usind single-sided formwork on both sides and using support frames and brackets.  

Single-sided formwork without frame imprint 

Single-sided solutions from MEVA involved the support frames STB 300 and STB 450 on Mammut wall panels, sturdy enough to take the high concrete pressure. In order to achieve a blemish-free concrete finish without any panel imprint, alkus all-plastic facing sheets were welded together and mounted on the panels as a separate facing.   

Round wall ends formed with Circo circular formwork 

The architects demanded perfectly rounded wall ends. These were achieved using a half shell of MEVA‘s standard circular formwork Circo, connected to the Mammut wall panels using the identical Mammut clamp. This reduced assembly effort and continued the superior, smooth concrete finish in all details of the pour.  Concrete works left behind an architectural finish distinguished by its smoothness and evenness, achieved pour after pour throughout the building period. The entire length of the flood protection wall stands testimony to the quality level achievable with standard MEVA products.
